Girl In Confused Face Meme

I am highly agitated! Recently a student took a picture of her peer and loaded it up on a social media site. The picture was not the most becoming picture of the teenage girl, but which one of us hasn’t taken an unbecoming picture? I know I have tons. And I’ve seen plenty of pictures that let me know I’m not alone. However, the picture of the teenage girl quickly went viral and many memes have been created using her picture, often times accompanied with unflattering sayings or are followed by a trail of negative comments in regards to her looks. The picture is plastered all over the internet. A Facebook page has been created (more than likely by her peers because they use her real name) to mock her. Several other Facebook accounts have been created to mock her with a following of 69K,one with 22K, another with 26K just to mention a few. Negative repost of this picture have been posted by celebrities. The website Odgossip.com, a satire site, states “this is a Satire Website. Fictional Stories Just for laughs”, created a story concerning the picture, in turn, “reputable” (or not-so-reputable) news stations, blogs and publications such as The Source Magazine, Centric TV, local news 15 of Mobile Alabama have picked up the satire post and reported the false story as real. Adults are defrauding a young girl of her character in order to make money based off a site that makes up fake ridiculing stories.

This type of thing already upset me before which is why I don’t watch the news or take heart to most things I read about but this has hit close to home.  I know this teenager. She attends my church. I have known her for several years, have watched her grow up and am a friend of the family. Her name is not Kiesha Johnson. She is not 16. She does not live in Alabama. She is not suing Instagram for $500 million. And most importantly she does not deserve to be treated and talked about in the way that she is.

I am disgusted at how people utilize the media to project people in such a negative manner all for the sake of getting likes, views, gaining a following or earning an income. And we are so silly to believe everything that we hear and join in on the gossip even when the source states that what they are publishing is not real. I am baffled at how evil people are and how they don’t care as long as they get a good laugh or can express how they feel towards matters they are ignorant to.

It is only because of mean spirited people who decided that making fun of this young girl was entertainment that she now has the whole world looking at her referring to her as an ugly bitch, ill built bitch, pretty monster, a beast, talking about her hair and calling her dumb amongst MANY other things. I had enough self esteem issues on my own growing up. Can you imagine having your face blasted all over the World Wide Web and majority of the comments referencing your picture is to talk bad about you?? The sad thing is most people don’t consider it being mean spirited, but just having fun. She is a victim. It’s all fun and games until people end up dead. It is this type of situation that leads people to killing themselves or killing others. Then people want to feel sorrowful and filled with regret that they perpetuated the problem instead of showing love, compassion to help stop problem. What is wrong with us as a people???

She didn’t ask to be in the limelight she is an innocent teenager who is being maliciously attacked for no reason. But it doesn’t matter to most because this is now a conversation piece showing how shallow our minds can be. Surely there is something  going on in your own life of worthy of speaking of instead of choosing to gossip about the lives of others.

Think about the things you’re posting and reposting…. Is it true? Is it right? Is it edifying? Does it matter? If you were the subject would you repost it about yourself? What if it was your child?

There is a young girl suffering emotionally and feeling helpless all because we wanted to laugh. Come on people we’ve got to do better.

“Love is that condition in the human spirit so profound that it allows me to survive, and better than that, to thrive with passion, compassion, and style.” Maya Angelou
"Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true."
Martin Luther King Jr.
